The Second World War saw many developments in synthetic materials which delighted many women in the form of ’nylons’ as well as plastic and foam. These ‘modern’ products revolutionized furniture manufacture in enabling mass production of affordable furniture.
New materials meant new futuristic designs and exciting new shapes. They are great fun to reupholster as I can wrap foam and fabric around curves and contours.
Most mass-produced furniture of today is held together with glue and staples, and start showing signs of wear and tear sooner than expected. It is estimated that 22 million pieces of furniture are discarded each year equating to 670,000 tons, with an incredible 51% of which only needing a slight repair - a bit of new foam, new leg or caster or just a great fabric.
Please don’t throw out your sofa or chair! Pass them onto upholsterers who relish rescuing, re-invigorating and re-purposing furniture which look beyond hope!
